The 2015 RCA National Rowing Championship
The St. Catharines Rowing Club will host The 2015 Rowing Canada Aviron National Rowing Championships from October 8th to 10th. These championships will be an important step in the selection of the Rio 2016 Olympic team, in addition to other National team squads. Canada's 2015 national team members and those vying for a spot in the upcoming Olympic selection camp will be competing in this regatta. We expect upwards of 300 athletes, coaches and officials from across Canada to take part in the three day competition. Competitors will start arriving in St.Catharines a few days prior to the start of racing to prepare and train at the race facility. As this is a pre-Olympic year, the event takes place in October to allow for the optimal timing for team selection and training. Spectators and the general public will have access to the newly renovated Craig Swayze Grandstand to watch the final championship racing on Saturday, Oct 10.
This regatta will start competition with a 1900 metre time trial that will have all competitors racing in singles or in pairs against the clock to decide their assignment to the appropriate second round for their event/category. Competitors then race in a format of quarter finals, repechage, semifinals and finals to determine each event’s national champion. Included in this National Championship regatta will be Para athletes who will race in singles and doubles.
The time trial takes place on day 1 – Thursday, October 8th starting at 9:00 am, followed by quarter finals for those events with high entries. On Friday, October 9th we will race reps, and semifinals, as well as the lower level finals. Finals B (places 7-12), and Finals A (places 1-6) will be raced on Saturday, October 10th. Racing will start at the 9:00 am on both Friday and Saturday. We expect the final race to be completed at approximately 11:30 am on Saturday. The Craig Swayze Grandstand will be open for spectators to watch the championship finals on Saturday.
Reception-BBQ- Awards and Medal Presentations
After the conclusion of the last race on Saturday, gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented at a special gathering of athletes, coaches, officials, family and friends. New to the event this year is a special reception and BBQ prior to the presentation of the medals. This will take place at the St.Catharines Rowing Alumni Association Clubhouse located atop Henley Island and overlooking the beautiful Martindale Pond and the race course. Also new to the event this year is the presentation by Rowing Canada of the International Recognition Awards to the 2015 Canadian National Team members. This event will be open to all participants in the regatta, our sponsors, supporters as well as friends and family of the athletes. Tickets for the BBQ may be purchased at the Regatta office for $12.
The St.Catharines Rowing Club is looking forward to hosting this event and showcasing our talented local athletes that represented us so well this past summer at the TO 2015 Pan Am Games as well as the World Championship Regattas. Come watch local athletes Natalie Mastracci, Eric Woelfl, Grayson Gray, James Myers, David DeGroot, Matt Buie, Matthew Finley and Tim Schrijver, along with many other local aspiring athletes as they compete in an attempt to become 2015 Canadian National Champions.
